The Mellons Bay Way
Kia ako ki te whakatere to tātou ao hurihuri.
Mellons Bay School is a modern day, semi traditional school with progressive values. These values help drive and direct learning as students endeavor to navigate their changing world in the 21st century and beyond. The school has a caring and friendly environment. They are proud of who they are. It is a place where the student is front and centre and where all decisions made are based on what is best for each individual child.
Our Values
The school is strong on its three core values - Respect, Responsibility and Resilience that motivate and drive student decision making. These underpin learning and life at Mellons Bay School.
Our Learner Profile
We desire at every level of our school, that our students become more Confident, Connected, Caring, Communicative and Creative individuals as they learn to navigate our changing world.
Our Logo
The logo symbol is a stylised seahorse and symbolises the Mellons Bay School student.
It is split into five parts - the mouth (snout), head, body, tail and dorsel fin. These collectively represent the 5C’s (the shape of the symbol is an abstract ‘C’) and can also act as metaphors for the key ingredients of what defines a Mellons Bay School Learner.
To begin with the mouth (snout) of the seahorse is a metaphor for the tools that students use to take knowledge (food) in.
The body can talked about in relation to how students process information.
The head represents learning and understanding with the eyes playing a key role in how students ‘see’ information.
The dorsel fin can represent the 3 core values (there are three waves in the fin showing movement) and how these help ‘direct learning’.
The tail could be a metaphor for ‘decision making’ as it is used to hold on to objects to evade predators or capture prey.
The tail spirals into a koru shape symbolising growth and learning with every decision made.
The texture of the seahorse logo is based on the exo-skeleton that helps protect them. Students grow in their ability and resilience to withstand the trials of everyday life. The colours are loosely based on the school colours. Finally, the logo style is modern, smart and traditional to align with the nature of the school.
